Elizabeth Parkins lived through a nightmare come true—getting kidnapped by a serial killer. Seeking a fresh start, she moves to Texas, but escaping her demons proves impossible when she's too terrified to leave her own apartment. A small, accidental fire sparks a coping method she'd never expected, and brings an amazing man to her door.
Firefighter Cade "Sledge" Turner's idyllic life ended the day his sister was kidnapped. Now he knows firsthand that tragedy can befall anyone, at any time. Meeting Elizabeth on the job was a gift. Cade can envision spending his life with this woman. He understands what she's been through, is willing to help her heal…though even Cade is unaware of Beth's new secret obsession.
As Beth takes steps to help herself heal, and Cade attempts to earn her trust and prove his own, they're both about to be tested—in a way that could see everything they've worked for go up in flames.
* Shelter for Elizabeth is the 5th book in the Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliffhanger endings.
Title: Shelter for Elizabeth
Author: Susan Stoker
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Series or Standalone: Standalone Series (Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes #5)
I recently came upon this author after having read a previous book in this series and after falling in love with the characters in that one, it was a no brainer for me to come back for more with this one.
Now, I’ll admit. Even though she does appear in a previous installment within this series, I came into this book meeting Elizabeth blind. I knew nothing of her past, other than what the blurb explained, and where in some instances that may have hindered my enjoyment of a story, it didn’t here.
I fell in love with Cade and Elizabeth’s story and while reading, I didn’t feel as though I was missing a whole lot, not having the background in full that I would have had going in had I read the previous story. I do know that after experiencing this story, I’m eager to go back and meet her officially though, much like I am with all of the other books I have yet to read and would definitely urge others to do the same, just for the sheer enjoyment one receives from reading a story by this author.
The author’s ability to weave a story that is equal parts, beautiful, heartfelt and moving is an amazing thing and what keeps me coming back for more. Elizabeth and Cade’s journey to happiness is by no means an easy one, secrets threatening the very foundation they are beginning to build, but it is a very fulfilling one and one that now that it’s over, I already feel myself missing.
What really stood out for me though, what felt so very real, especially having dealt with something very similar in my past was Elizabeth’s agoraphobia. It read very real to me and quite possibly bonded me even more to her than I already was. Feeling for her. It’s not an easy feat taking on a real life issue like this, but I do believe the author handled it with the right amount of care.
I don’t want to go into too much detail in terms of what the book is about as I do believe this story, much like the ones before it is one that needs to be experienced by the reader more than being told about it, but I will say that if you love unique love stories, ones with the right mix of drama and real romance, along with characters that are as real as they are sweet and sometimes even heart melting, I do believe you need to look no further than this author and this story.
My thanks to the author and all others involved in letting me read this story before it’s official release. Cade and Elizabeth’s journey one that I am oh so glad to have taken the chance on.
