Joy Mathers has spent the last three years numb. From her past, her present, and her inevitable future. She was supposed to escape the deadbeat town of Chancing, but now it’s her prison, and she couldn’t leave…even if she wanted to.

For the last two years, Dawson Spencer has been holed up in some of the worst corners of the world. He's seen things no man should ever see, and thought nothing could ever shock him. Until he returns to Chancing and discovers everything has changed in the town he once called home.

He thought Joy was away pursuing her dreams. She thought Dawson was never coming back. And while their connection might still be there, Joy isn't Dawson's anymore, and it would be better—safer—for everyone if he walked away. But walking away isn’t an option for Dawson, not this time.

He gave up everything to protect her once … and he’ll do it again

L.A. Cotton has a way with words that just seems to keep me coming back for more, so it was pretty much a no brainer that I was going to jump in the same way I did with her others with this story.

But where the others seemed to capture me in a way that even now hasn’t let go, this one fell as little short of the mark.

Before I go on with the review, I will say that if you’ve got domestic violence and drug abuse triggers, you might want to tread lightly with this one as these issues are prevalent throughout. They are very real issues that were shown in a pretty graphic way at certain points and that might not be for everyone, but didn’t cause me any distress as far as the story goes. If anything, the way it was portrayed, made me sympathetic to the ones living through it.

Now, the characters themselves, on their own as people, I connected to. Joy, what puts her in the position she’s in the when the book begins and everything that happened after it, even though I can’t say with certainty I would act in the same manner if the shoe was on the other foot, I felt for her. I could understand how she found herself where she was, and the same could be said for Dawson. I got him. As the story progresses and you learn the real reason behind his leaving in the past, what he did in an effort to protect those that he loved, well I got that. I connected to it and it was even part of the reason I enjoyed him as a character. While he may not have made the best decisions, you couldn’t argue that he did things with the best of intentions.

They were both very solid characters, but I felt like we were told more than we were shown why these two worked. Why they were made strictly for each other. I needed more in that regard and even moments with them in the here and now, in order to connect me more fully to them and it just didn’t come.

I enjoyed the more suspenseful aspects of this story. Where that has been present in previous books by LA Cotton, the level and kind of suspense found here was different from her other books that I’ve read but was a good part of the reason I kept turning the pages. I wanted and needed to know how it all turned out. I needed the bad guy (and bad guy isn’t exactly the right term for this piece of work trust me) to get what was coming to him and by books end, both of these authors delivered in that regard.

The secondary characters were also a very good fit here. Lex’s story is definitely one I’m looking forward to reading because he stood out just as much to me as the main characters did and I’m intrigued by both brothers present here as well. Dawson’s and Lex’s. Mikey burrowed his way into my heart nicely in this so I’m hoping to see at least a little bit of him in the future even if it’s not a full book.

The pace of this was quick, so if you’re looking for a fast paced suspenseful type read with romance, this might be for you. It’s definitely an intriguing and engaging read and one you should definitely give a shot.

My thanks to the authors and all others involved in letting me read this story before official release and I’m excited to see what they come up with in the future.
