I laid my head against the cool glass of the bus window and watched the rain slick against it. The water beaded against the glass and then slid down in little rivulets that I traced with my finger.

I wouldn’t miss the rain.

I wouldn’t miss anything about Oregon.

That place wasn’t my home. Never had been, and never would be.

With a jolt, the bus roared to life, startling me, but I relaxed a moment later when we pulled out of the station.

Freedom was so close to being mine.

I watched the people on the street as the bus pulled away. I was searching for buzzed brown hair and eerie black eyes, but he wasn’t amongst them.

He didn’t know I’d left yet.

And hopefully, by the time he did, I’d be long gone.

I adjusted my hoodie so my face was hidden from the other people on the bus and wiggled around, settling myself in for the long ride to California.

Unlike the other people on the bus, I didn’t have a cellphone to keep me company. Cellphones were traceable so I’d ditched mine. I couldn’t risk him finding me, because if he had I was certain he’d kill me. He would’ve eventually killed me if I stayed, too. My only option had been to take the risk of running away. I would have rather died on my terms than his, but if everything went according to plan, I’d be free and he’d never find me.

He called me Scarlett, but Scarlett didn’t exist.

Scarlett was a lie.

My name was Ariella, and I was reclaiming my stolen life.

I've pretty much read every book that Micalea’s as ever written so far, they all have remarkable storylines and characters.  But The Lies That Define Us is something else altogether.  I admire an author who takes chances in order to give us a haunting tale of love, loss with the right amount of darkness with intrigue and suspense.  This is my 6 star review for this amazing, one of the best stories I've had the pleasure of reading so far.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of TLTDU by Micalea Smeltzer in exchange for an honest and spoiler free review.  I hope from the bottom of my heart that my review will do this story enough justice.

" Secrets and lies, woven together by fear and hate "

There are so many crazy twists and turns, jaw dropping, knee buckling angst and chilling suspense with this story that I don't want to give anything away.

Ari finds herself homeless and on the run from something so dark that it would have broken any other person but not her.  She's afraid, guarded but has spunk and determination.  Ollie and Talia save her from being homeless by literarily dumping her on Liam because they see Ari as the perfect match for his broody, negative and obnoxious attitude.  Liam has been hurt so deeply that he doesn't know how to be anything but an ass to everyone.  Ari doesn't take his crap and is not afraid to let him know either.  She's got fire and that's what Liam needs in his life right now.  The past will eventually catch up to Ari and threatened the lives of the people that she formed an everlasting bond with.

              “My Tiger"

There is no slow easing into this story, it grabbed me at hurricane speed right from the first page until the very last one read.   This story blew me away, even when I thought I had it figured it out I was always wrong.   Gripping and unexpected, this story literally took my breath away and kept me on the edge of my seat.

When Liam was first introduced in The Road That Leads to Us, I had a gut feeling that his story was going to be intense and raw. What I wasn't expecting was how much it would move me and leave me in awe.  Ari and Liam together were like fire work.  Slightly darker than what Micalea usually writes but I think it couldn't be done any differently because these characters demanded it.

Be prepared to be taken on a journey that you will not be prepared for.  This story is intense with raw emotions, dangerous, breathtaking and heartbreaking.  At the same time is so full of hope, promises, overwhelming love and a whole lot of kindness.  With captivating written words that penetrated my heart, soul, body and mind that I had no choice but to get attached to these amazingly crafted characters.  I couldn't help but feel connected.  Usually I either love the hero or the heroine a little bit more than the other, but they are the perfect loveable characters who showed strength, courage and selflessness.

Bottom line is I feel there is no amount of praise that will do a book of this caliber enough justice.  Seamless plot, awesome storyline, and phenomenally framed characters that are vulnerable and strong at the same time. To me it was just perfect.

This story can be read as a standalone.  The author wrote it in a way that the readers could catch up easily without missing any key points.  Although it is the second book in the Us series.  Liam is introduced in the first book, but don't stop yourself from reading this one first because you should be okay to ease yourself into it.  For those who have read the Willow Creek series, some characters will come back and play a minor role in this story.  It's told in a dual POV with an HEA.  This story is somewhat darker than what Micalea writes but it had to be this way.  There are no trigger warnings though. I strongly recommend reading this story.  All this authors previous books are worth your precious time and money.
