Whether it’s a Romero, a Moreno or one of many men in between, if Elizabeth Reyes writes it, you know you’re in for one hell of a story.

Or like this was for me, one hell of an emotional journey.

It should be stated up front that while this is book five in a series, you don’t need the four that came before it in order to follow it. It can’t hurt, but since I hadn’t experienced this particular series before jumping into this book and found no issues following along, I don’t think you will either.

Though, with the way this one played out, I definitely need to go back and experience how some of the people present in this came to be what they are.

I was a little unprepared for just how fast I would fall for AJ Romero. I should have seen it coming, I mean, I’ve fallen for quite a few of the authors hero’s since I came across her, but those were nothing in comparison to this.

AJ is quick to rise. He’s got one hell of a temper and you’re shown right from the jump through various instances just how impossible it is for him to control. From a young age, through high school, the minor leagues and finally on a team in the majors, he’s had a hell of a time gaining control of it and actually using it to his advantage. And it’s never been harder than when he finally meets his coach’s daughter Addison.

But what you also get to see is a man who despite that, knows what he wants, even though it takes him a bit to finally act on it. And when he loves, much like hero’s in the past, he loves with everything he has. His heart to me right from the start, especially when he first meets Addison’s young daughter Clair, was incredible. What a sweetheart he was under all of the alpha type attitude and interactions with women in the past. He was more than all of that and I’m pretty sure I fell in love with him even faster than Addi did.

Addison knows all about AJ, his reputation, his ability on the field, all of it. At least she thinks she does, but as she learns right from the first time they come across each other, you can’t judge a book by its cover. AJ is everything she shouldn’t want, but also everything she deserves to have.

Where AJ came into this with issues, so did Addison and I enjoyed that they both weren’t perfect. That they were capable of making mistakes. It made them come across very real for me and invested me in their love story.

What starts off as them meeting and there being misconceptions about who they are, quickly turns into this infectious friendship and then one hell of a romantic relationship. Ripe with drama, but balanced out by some of the sweetest, and even at times steamy, scenes.

But for me personally, it was the character of Clair that stole the show for me. A seven year old girl hooked me right from the moment she made her entrance, and just like I was invested in Addi and AJ being able to get past whatever might be thrown in their path, I was also invested in her. I wanted a happily ever after for her maybe even more so than I did for her mom. Much older than her years, she was equal parts insightful and adorable and added just a bit more awesomeness to this story than was already there.

This being about baseball, and with me having picked up and read a couple of baseball themed stories, I wasn’t sure how I was going to react to that aspect. It’s always hard when you’re writing about a sport because there is just so much you can add, but when you do, it can often times become bogged down with detail. That didn’t happen here, but instead had just the right amount of details about the game and sport in general to keep me hooked into that aspect as well.

It moved at a pretty steady pace and I do believe that much like this authors other works, everything seemed to take place at the right time. AJ and Addi didn’t immediately hook up, there was a bit of a slow burn, but not enough to make one pull their hair out. And when they were finally together, there was just the right amount of external conflict to emotionally tie me to it. Making it impossible to put down because I had to know if it would play out the way my heart wanted it to.

It gave me exactly what I wanted and even more and ended on a pretty hilarious, yet sweet as hell moment that I don’t think I’ll forget for some time to come. I’m such a total sucker for anything remotely involving kids that the ending of this story went over epically with me.

The only thing that prevented this from being a five star read for me was Addison at times. While I did connect with her and even in a lot of instances understood her motivations where certain things were concerned, the amount of times she held back from AJ (from everyone really) started to grate on me. With as up front and honest as he always seemed to be with her, I guess I just wanted to see more of that from her end of things as well. Not all the time, but more than I did.

I went into this expecting to be given good story, but what I didn’t expect but that I loved was that I got so much more. A gripping emotional story, with just the right amount of humor laced throughout to keep you from drowning in the heavier areas. A romance that felt as real as it read.

I am definitely Team Rage.

My thanks to the author and all others involved in letting me read this before its official release. It’s a journey that I’m so glad that I went on.
