Eloped at the age of eighteen. Separated at the age of eighteen. Disappeared at the age of eighteen. This is what happened to Calla Greer. Her perfect life was shattered on her wedding day when she caught her husband Cain with another woman just hours after they said I do. With her heart broken, she moves across the border to Windsor, Canada to get away from the nightmare she stumbled upon. Hell bent on going to college and fulfilling her dream of becoming a lawyer.

After six long years of still being married, Calla returns to Detroit to have Cain sign divorce papers.

Only Cain has changed.

He’s bitter, angry and for a good reason.

At least that’s what he’s been telling himself for the past six years.

Cain Bexley had fifteen minutes to destroy his marriage to protect the woman he loved.  He did the only thing he could think of to make her leave. He jumped in bed with a woman. Life at home was a lie. Lives were at risk.

People are not who they seem.

Not even Cain’s dad or Calla’s parents are who they say they are. When Calla shows up begging for a divorce. He shows her exactly who he is and no way in hell will he sign those papers.

What happens when six years later she returns? The only woman he has loved. A woman who has changed herself! When all the lies surface will she be able to forgive everyone she has trusted in her life or will Calla turn to the man who destroyed her?

My brain finally catches up with the fact I’m naked in front of Cain for the first time in six years. I sit up in a rush of water and bring my knees to my chest, resting my chin on top of them.
“You... you shouldn’t be in here.”
“You wouldn’t answer me,” he says exasperatedly.
“Well, no shit. My head was underwater. That still doesn’t give you the right to just walk in here.”
“When you don’t answer me when I’m standing right outside of a wide open door, not to mention the fact this is my house... well, then I think I have every fucking right. Don’t you?”
“No, I don’t. You could have just peeked in and seen I was fine and waited. Was this some kind of ploy for you to get me right where you wanted me? Are you so afraid that the minute you turn your back on me I will up and try to leave? Are you going to watch my every move? Or did you have an ulterior motive in suggesting I shower, just so I could strip down naked and you could make damn sure I didn’t go anywhere? So tell me what the hell it is, because this back and forth, hot and cold game you’ve started is really starting to piss me the hell off!”
I glare up at him, not quite able to read his eyes.
What I do know is that the sexual tension between the two of us is so strong, it’s working triple overtime. There’s only one tiny little obstacle in our way... and that would be our past. The fact that I can’t trust him. He broke every bit of it the same day he broke my heart. One of us needs to give in, take charge so we can just fuck and move on.

One of the first things I noticed about this book was that it isn’t your typical MC read. There are quite a few things about it that remind me of other books of that nature that I’ve read, but it stood out because of another element added to it.

The mob/mafia angle is brought into this quite early on and becomes an integral part, even going so far as to overshadow the entire MC concept very early on. So while I want to label this as strictly MC, I can’t. This is definitely more mafia based, especially as the story progresses and we meet Scarface.

Calla and Cain are childhood sweethearts. In love with one another from a very young age, yet torn apart by what is believed to be friction between their fathers. So being together, it all remains a secret and one that they’ve kept until they of course take the next logical step in their love progression and get married.

Calla going home to inform her parents and Cain going to do the same with his own father (who happens to run an MC). Neither one expecting that their first day of marriage would ultimately be their last one together and all because of a secret that until Calla comes into town six years later, remained buried.

I have to admit, the truth coming out quite quickly after Calla comes back took me off guard. I did expect that it would become something more drawn out and that the friction between the still married yet separated couple would be high most of the way through until it all came out. That’s not what happened here. It came out early on, along with a whole lot of other secrets that Calla had no idea about.

The truth about who she really is and why her parents, Cain and even his father played things out the way they did so many years beforehand. Why Calla had to have her heart completely run through the meat grinder when the reality is, Cain never stopped loving her, never stopped caring about her.

For some reason I can’t explain, I connected quite easily to Calla in this. At times, especially in the beginning, I loved her smart mouth. The way she didn’t take any crap from Cain despite knowing that even with the years apart and the betrayal she still felt after what he did to her, she still loved him. I laughed quite a few times because it was almost as though no one saw that spitfire part of her coming.

The tough edge was a nice touch and it invested me in her. Along with the way she felt after walking in on the man she loves on her wedding day doing the unthinkable. I understood her pain, every bit of it. I even understood how that ended up shaping at least in part who she became. How her edges came to be since she started out seeming to be sweet.

I also connected to Cain at parts, but in the very beginning I have to admit, it was a bit of a struggle. For someone that claimed to love Calla like no other before, and never able to move on from her, keeping the girl he slept with in order to make Calla run all those years ago around, and having her by his side at least in part when she shows up again years later, well it didn’t exactly make me believe in the guy.

As the story moved on though, I did. Some of the things he did, it was all very sweet. The meaning behind it did get to me and make me open up more to him and by books end, the way I felt about him in the beginning began to fade away.

This book is definitely about more than their romance though. There is quite a lot of suspense that takes place later in the book, a level of violence that I should have been expecting given the type of read it was, still taking me a bit off guard with what happened. It definitely takes a dark turn. This is a family ripe with secrets and I’m interested to see where the author and her characters take us next.

My thanks to the author and all others involved in letting me read this before release.
