~*♥Release Blitz with Review♥*~ Path of Thieves by Sunniva Dee

Path of Thieves
Sunniva Dee
Publication date: June 27th 2017
Genres: Contemporary, Young Adult
Football hero by day and thief by night, Charles “Cugs” McConnely leads a double life in the small town of Newbark, Florida. At sundown, the seventeen-year-old turns burglar, forced into the business by the man who should be teaching him the difference between right and wrong: his father.
Cugs is a pro at both games, but only one can secure him a college scholarship. It should be an easy decision, a no-brainer—if Newbark hadn’t proffered the only life he knows.

After run-ins with Nadine Paganelli, his accidental victim and the sole person to have caught him in the act, Cugs starts to realize that hearts can be stolen too.
When his long-lost sister makes contact, lies are uncovered and truths revealed. Suddenly, Cugs finds himself questioning both plans and loyalties. Because sometimes the only way to move forward is by pulling the bottom out of the past.

EXCERPT:

Last night wasn’t good. Dad’s getting more eager. He wants to accomplish so much on his shopping sprees, blaming a more expensive life now that Step-Cynth’s with us. I’m not in a place to meddle, but it seems six-packs of aprons aren’t the only things she buys on his bill.
My father’s becoming sloppy. Yesterday, we returned in the early morning after hitting almost a dozen houses. The owners of four of them were still at home. Yeah. He isn’t doing his homework the way he used to.
Thing is I’m tired. I don’t see a change in sight. Now, I try to keep my eyes open as I drive the wreck to Orlando to meet up with Keyon. Which is going to come back and bite me in the ass. What other option did I have though, come off as a coward to, in the words of Liza, “freaking Keyon Arias of Alliance Cage Warriors?”
Keyon is already there when I enter the Hard Rock Café. He fills out his side of the booth with fighter shoulders and wide thighs. Elbows on the table and bent over a glass of water, he lifts a hand in greeting as soon as he sees me. My chance to chicken out just dissipated.
“Cugs,” he says, voice husky like it is after a fight. Maybe that’s his voice now. I remember it light, prepubescent, I guess, from back when my own had the pitch of a little kid.
“Keyon.” I tip my head, acknowledging him without a smile, and then I sit down in front of him.
“Soda?”
I think of the possibility of going to Gainesville for the tryouts. “Ice water.”
Keyon doesn’t need to do much to get the waitress over. Half-turned to our table, she’s hovering with a watchful eye. When he glances up, she meets his stare immediately and hurries over.
“How are you?” From his expression, he’s not just being polite. He wants to know. “It’s been so long since we’ve talked.”
“I’m good,” I lie.
“What have you been up to? Your sister has been trying to get a hold of you.”
I’ve steeled myself for questions, assuming they would come. I didn’t think he’d start with them right away though.
“Oh you know, living it up in Newbark.” I do a long, purposely fake nod hoping it will make him laugh. Instead, he studies me, starting with my eyes then traveling over my face.
“You liking it there? How’s your old man?”
I shrug, unable to lie about him. “Married again. To a girl Paislee’s age.”
His eyes widen a little. “Is that so?”
“Yeah, as of a few months ago.”
“Geez.” He blows air out his nose. “New stepmother, huh?”
“Yeah, she isn’t exactly Mom.” And there, I said it. I hope he doesn’t notice. I open my mouth to add something, whatever, to get us off the subject, but he jumps in before me.
“You miss your mother?”
Silence.
Snowmen. Hot chocolate. Cold summer lakes. Blue lips.

 Title: Path of Thieves
Author: Sunniva Dee
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Young Adult, Coming of Age
Series or Standalone: Standalone
Rating: ★★★★
Young-Adult books are my jam. They’re also my bread and butter depending on how you look at it. Food analogies aside, I don’t think, even when I’m a senior citizen, I’ll ever stop loving the way it feels to read one of these books.

To be transported back in time to a period I honestly hated when I was in it, but enjoy because of all of the emotion present within it. Which is definitely one of the things I enjoyed most about this novel. The feeling behind it. The angst, self-doubt, awkwardness of every first encounter. There really is nothing like it because it’s all very real. No matter what side you find yourself on in the social ladder. The joy in moments, the sadness in others, it’s a tumultuous time for a person, but one that I like to think a lot of teens come out stronger for having endured.

Cugs is an interesting character in this way because he’s popular (star athlete in football, who catches the eye of more than one person) but he’s not self centered, OR a jerk. He’s also not in the same social standing as a lot of others he interacts with, but he can often appear like he is. He’s just a guy that seems to fit everywhere.

Minus the whole “shopping” part. Yes, I said shopping, but if you paid any attention to the title of this story you know it’s not actually shopping I mean.

The romance that took place within this story, it drives a lot of the decisions Cugs does make, but it isn’t everything that this book stands on. No, for this reader, I enjoyed the romance, but I focused more on the changes that he made within himself. The lightbulb moment if you will when he wakes up and he realizes for himself (not because he’s gonna lose a girl, or his team or his secret is about to be found out), that the way things have been going is wrong.

The family dynamic here on both sides was powerful. On one end you’ve got the darker side with his father and the other side, the light as he struggles to figure out what is real and what’s not. Is his mom really his mom, etc. Biology versus his memories and the things he’s been force fed to believe play a big part here and I enjoyed seeing the struggle to rise out of that, plus the payoff when he does. The happy so to speak.

So yeah, as much as I loved the romance, I loved this book so much because it was more than that. More than football. It was Cugs doing what I have a teenager his age doing right now. Growing up. Becoming a man and rising out of his childhood, no matter how bad or good it was.

For a first foray into the world of Young-Adult, I do believe this author did it justice. She took a unique idea, one that for this reader worked and she ran with it, creating a very realistic world within it, and characters that weren’t just paper cut-outs but who felt to me to be real people. My hat is off to her for stepping away from her New Adult roots and diving into often stranger waters.

I also enjoyed the connection that was made here to another of her couples in the New Adult realm and exactly who they were to Cugs and what they came to mean by the end of the story. It was a nice little trip back in time to another book I enjoyed and it was nice to catch up with those characters in Keyon and Paislee again.

If you’re like me and YA is your jam or even your bread and butter, then I suggest you give this book a chance and hopefully you’ll enjoy it as much, if not more, than I did.

My thanks to the author for letting me read an ARC of this before official release. This is definitely a journey I’m glad to have taken.

Author Bio:
Between studies, teaching, and advising, Sunniva has spent her entire adult life in a college environment. Most of her novels are new adult romance geared toward smart, passionate readers with a love for eclectic language and engaging their brain as well as their heart while reading.
Born in the Land of the Midnight Sun, the author spent her early twenties making the world her playground. Southern Europe: Spain, Italy, Greece--Argentina: Buenos Aires, in particular. The United States finally kept her interest, and after half a decade in Los Angeles, she now lounges in the beautiful city of Savannah.
Sometimes, Sunniva writes with a paranormal twist (Shattering Halos, Stargazer, and Cat Love). At other times, it's contemporary (Pandora Wild Child, Leon's Way, Adrenaline Crush, Walking Heartbreak, and Dodging Trains, coming in late March 2016).
This author is the happiest when her characters let their emotions run off with them, shaping her stories in ways she never foresaw. She loves bad-boys and good-boys run amok, and like in real life, her goal is to keep the reader on her toes until the end of each story.

EXCERPT

Admitting I haven’t tried Sushi makes me realize there are plenty of things I missed out on experiencing. That’s not saying I would have necessarily wanted to try different things or even liked them once I had, but I never got the chance to make those choices or decisions.
Aside from different foods, I missed out on a bunch of firsts too.
“Hey, are you okay?” he asks, tilting his head to the side as he stares at me. “If you don’t want Sushi we get something else…”
I shake my head.
“It’s not that.”
“Then what is it?”
“I just realized I’m twenty-six years old and not only are there so many things I probably haven’t tried but there are things I never got the chance to experience. Things I pushed out of my head because I told myself there was no point in dwelling on it. Now that I’m free, it feels wrong, if that makes any sense. I mean I know I lost twelve years and everyone keeps saying I’ve got a second chance to make a life for myself, but all those things I missed…I can’t get that back. I can’t replace all the miserable moments with what should’ve been. I guess what I’m trying to say is…I can’t trade my painful firsts for the firsts I dreamed I’d have.”
“Says who?”
My brows knit in confusion and I blink as he turns fully, propping his leg on my bed.
“Name one first you wish you could change.”
“Why? You can’t change them.”
“Maybe not all of them,” he says with a shrug. “But if we can manage to change a few that should count for something.”
Biting down on my lip, I think about his suggestion.
“My first kiss is something I wish I could change,” I say honestly, lifting my head to meet his expressionless face. “Papa,” I mutter, cringing as I say the name. “That’s what he made me call him,” I explain, watching Deuce’s jaw go rigid.
“Rush?”
I shake my head.
“Yankovich,” he growls.
For as long as he kept me, I never knew his real name. Hearing it now sends chills down my spine as I recall the first time I was kissed and how Yankovich’s lips felt against mine.
“It was rough and not in a good way,” I confess. “It wasn’t done in a way to make me feel desired but in a way where I was scared of what would happen if I didn’t oblige. So, I kissed him back and hated myself afterward.”
Muttering a curse, Deuce runs his fingers roughly through his hair before turning back to me.
“Close your eyes,” he directs.
“What for?”
“I won’t hurt you,” he promises, evading my question. A foreign feeling erupts inside of me, one I can’t quite place and I find myself closing my eyes, not because he ordered me to but because I trust he won’t hurt me.
Seconds tick by before I hear Deuce’s exasperated breath. Then I feel the mattress dip and as I continue to keep my eyes closed I subconsciously lean forward. His hands lift to my cheeks and the next breath he releases brushes gently over my lips.
Then it happens.
Deuce lays his mouth over mine.
For a moment neither of us move as our lips stay locked on one another. Slowly, he then moves his mouth, taking my lower lip between his and giving it a gentle tug. Sucking softly, he parts my lips and a small gasp spills from my mouth into his.
My heart pounds against my chest as he applies more pressure, making our kiss rougher in all the right ways. I’m not scared or trying to drift away. I’m right there with him, flying high on sensation and adrenaline. His tongue touches my lips, prying them open. Following his lead, I part my lips. He pushes his tongue into my waiting mouth and glides it over mine, tasting me—teaching me that some firsts can be rewritten.
Pulling back slightly he pecks my lips once more and I open my eyes. Keeping his eyes fixed to mine, he licks his lips and drops his hands from my face.
“There you go,” he rasps, as if what just happened didn’t shake the ground beneath us. Unsure what to say, I lift my fingers to my lips and watch as he leans his elbows on his knees. Silently, he stares into space before he slowly turns to me. His eyes immediately dart toward my mouth but quickly lift to my eyes and I wonder if he liked it as much as I did.
“You still got those matches I gave you?” he asks suddenly.
Biting my lip, I stare at him for a moment then lift my hips and reach into my pocket. Pulling out the book of matches my cheeks flush and I turn my palm over to display them. His lips quirk slightly as he slaps his hands against his thighs and rises to his feet.
“Let’s go,” he says, reaching for the hoodie I draped across the back of a chair. “Is this all you took from Reina?” he asks, tossing it onto the bed and crossing his arms as he leans against the wall.
I didn’t know I wasn’t going back there,” I reply, taking the hoodie from the bed. “Wait, where are we going?”
“To get food.”
“Raw food?” I question, slipping my arms through the hoodie before getting up from the bed. “No way.”
“Won’t know if you like it unless you try it,” he retorts, raising an eyebrow “Gotta strike the match, girl,” he adds, tipping his chin toward the book of matches I’m still holding.
“Are you daring me?”
“Maybe,” he says with a shrug. “You accepting?”
Licking my lips, I shove the matches back into my pocket and take a deep breath. If trying Sushi is anything like my new first kiss, then joining the land of the living might not be so bad. It might be scary but it’s a leap I’ve got to take.
“Under one condition,” I say, stepping closer to him. Continuing to lean against the wall, he raises an eyebrow as amusement flickers in his eye.
“You have to get me ice cream too.”
“You like ice cream?”
“We’re going to find out,” I tell him as I brush past him and walk into his room.
Grabbing the keys off the table, he follows me toward the door and reaches around me to open it.
“With manners like that it’s a wonder your room is a mess,” I tease as I walk outside.
“My room isn’t a mess…it’s lived in,” he argues, slamming the door shut behind him.
“I don’t have to wonder if you wear boxers or briefs,” I call over my shoulder as we head toward Wolf’s truck. “However, I’m not going to lie, I’m a little disappointed.”
“Yeah, why’s that?”
Pulling open the door, I climb inside and turn to him.
“I took you for a commando type of guy,” I tell him before shutting the door. Standing in front of the car, he braces one hand on the hood and peers at me through the windshield with a dumbfound expression on his face.
Something amazing happens then.
Something genuine and natural.
Something so unfamiliar to me but common to others.
I smile.
Then he smiles too and I decide Deuce has a great smile, one that if you stare at it long enough it can become an addiction. Isn’t that funny? I never knew a person could crave something so simple like someone else’s smile. I wonder if too much of someone’s smile can be bad for another person. I’d like to think not but what do I know—I’m the girl who never thought she’d smile again.
“Looks good on you,” he comments as he slides into the truck.
“What does?”
“A smile.”
“Yours isn’t so bad either,” I point out, realizing I’m still smiling. His lips quirk again as he pulls out of the lot and I find myself staring at him while he drives. The first time I saw Deuce, I didn’t think much about him. I don’t know if it was the drugs or something else, but at the time he was just another person. When you’ve spent most of your life surrounded by animals, you don’t take notice of people. They all look the same. They all act the same. You’ll expect them to hurt you and take from you. You give up hope that there are still people worth knowing. You give up on the good folks and lump everyone into one category.
In the days since I was rescued I’ve been noticing things. I’ve been noticing people, and right now I’m noticing Deuce. I’m noticing there is a twang hidden underneath that raspy voice and every now and then it becomes more prominent.
“Where are you from?”
He looks at me out of the corner of his eye.
“Caught that, huh?”
“Were you trying to hide it because you’re not very good at it,” I reply.
“Texas.”
Not expecting that response, my eyes widen at the admission but I quickly recover.
“Is it true everything is bigger in Texas?”
Another quirk of the lips.
Yeah, I was addicted.
“I’m not touching that one,” he quips.
Realizing the innuendo, I slap his arm and attempt to call him a jerk but I get distracted by the size of it.
Things are huge in Texas.

REVIEW

 Title: Roamer
Author: Janine Infante Bosco
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Suspense, Drama
Series or Standalone: Standalone Series (Nomad #3)
Rating: ★★★★
It doesn’t matter what series or book you start off with in terms of this author because one thing remains clear throughout all of them. She sets a bar when writing about issues that are very, very real, but doing so in a way that while painful, and downright excruciating to read about at times, is done with the utmost care in how it is presented.
Ally’s life leading into this story, what she struggles with throughout this story is the perfect example of that. Let alone the way she wrote the man we know as Deuce. Absolutely incredible. Gripping and full of feeling, this book may be one her best ones yet as she delves deeper into this band of Nomad’s.
This is an MC story, but it is in no way typical of other MC stories you may have read before. This author rises to the task of writing these resilient, strong men, and their even stronger ladies in a way that any author of any fiction should aspire to do. It’s thought provoking, heart stopping and wrenching, while at the same time done in a way that makes it appear almost cinematic in nature. You’re right there through every step visually and for this reader, that is phenomenal. It’s what you want your stories to do when you write them, while making you feel every single feeling along the way.
I could talk about the events that happen within the story, but this, much like others in the series is one of those stories that needs to be grabbed a hold of and experienced for yourself. If you’re anything like me, you won’t regret it. You won’t shy away from the darkness, and you’re jump with both feet at any sign of the light. It is just that wonderful of a read.
There are situations within this story that others may be triggered by, so you need to tread carefully, and pay attention to the authors note at the beginning of the tale, because as much as I would recommend this book to the world, I also realize it may not be for everyone. It hurts, a lot at times, so for anyone that may experience more pain than pleasure reading about the issues presented here, proceed with caution.
If you like your stories real, this is as real as it gets and I’m thankful that I took the chance on this author again to experience it, because no only am I walking away from a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience, but I’m also walking away from it with a greater understanding of the issues this couple, lots of couples face, and it’s made my heart bigger and my brain a little wiser for it.
So my thanks to the author and all others involved in letting me be a part of this couple’s journey with this ARC. I’ll treasure everything I felt and experienced while reading it always.
